AAF Response to Recent Remarks on Afghanistan from President Biden
(Washington, DC) – On Friday, November 4, 2022, in a speech on the CHIPS and Science Act in Carlsbad, California and addressing an audience that included veterans, President Biden repeatedly referred to Afghanistan as a “Godforsaken place”. These remarks were not only callous, they were wholly inaccurate.
God did not forsake Afghanistan, consecutive American administrations did.
We encourage the President and his administration to take responsibility for their actions and inactions in Afghanistan and to focus on repairing the harm created by the United States rather than exacerbating it with irresponsible rhetoric.
Many of America’s Afghan allies remain in harm’s way in Afghanistan awaiting a path to safety that was promised to them by the United States. Nearly
80,000 Afghans evacuated to the United States by the Biden administration remain in legal limbo and perpetually at risk of being sent back to an almost certain death.
Tens of thousands of Afghans evacuated by the United States to third countries remain separated from their families and still don’t know how or when they’ll reach safety in the United States.
While there is more than enough blame to go around for the catastrophe that has unfolded in Afghanistan since the President’s decision to withdraw American support for the 38 million Afghans now living under the Taliban, the buck stops with the President. We commit to continuing to stand with the many Americans, including millions of veterans, who will remind him.
The Afghan-American Foundation is a national 501(c)(3) non-profit organization representing and advancing the interests of Afghans and Afghan-Americans through advocacy, research, education and engagement.
