Afghan-American Foundation Response to Reports of Trump Admin Ending Protecrions for Afghan Allies

“The sacrifices America’s Afghan allies made were not temporary, the protection we offer them must also be permanent.”

April 13, 2025

The Afghan-American Foundation is deeply alarmed by reports that the Trump administration has decided to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Afghans who arrived in the United States following the 2021 U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. If confirmed, this decision would mark a grave betrayal of America’s promise to those who risked everything to stand with U.S. forces and values.

TPS is a humanitarian tool that protects individuals from deportation when returning to their home country would be unsafe. Afghanistan—under Taliban rule—remains deeply unstable, with widespread human rights violations and targeted persecution of women, minorities, and those affiliated with the United States.

In light of the parole program for Afghans coming to an end this year, TPS represents the most viable pathway to safety and stability for thousands of evacuees until more permanent protections can be secured. Ending it now would leave families once again in limbo, facing legal uncertainty and psychological trauma after having begun to rebuild their lives here.

These Afghan families—welcomed by communities across America—have become our neighbors, coworkers, and classmates. They are contributing to the economy, to our schools, and to our shared future. Removing them now would not only put lives at risk but dishonor the veterans, faith groups, and communities who fought and advocated to bring them here.

AAF urges the administration to reverse this decision and calls on all Americans to stand with Afghan families in their pursuit of lasting safety and dignity in the country they now call home. The sacrifices America’s Afghan allies made were not temporary—and the protection we offer them must not be either.
